Because FPMG and Adventist Health choose to not make clear that a physician belongs to its physician network and their physicians are expected to refer to other FPMG/Adventist system physicians, facilities and services, it is necessary that patients make an informed choice and talk with your doctor about their willingness to refer to an independent physician not in the Adventist network in addition to any Adventist physician you may be given, especially if that independent physician is more experienced or the best for your condition or situation. You should be referred to the best physician or specialist for YOU, not for the revenue for the network and for Adventist Health, whether or not the 'best' is employed by the system. The Adventist/FPMG physician or service may be the best for you. I'm sure that many, if not all, are fine physicians. But it is important for patients to make an informed choice. If you call the Physician Referral Line on the Florida Hospital website, they will most likely refer you to Adventist owned physicians. I recently called the Physician Referral line on the website where it lists ALL physicians who have staff prvileges. I asked for a surgeon for a potential breast biopsy. I was given 2 male general surgeons who are Adventist owned and do not specifically specialize in breast surgery. When I asked if there were female physicians, I was given 3 Adventist owned, two of whom do not specifically specialize in breast surgery-- even though there is a much more experienced female breast surgeon both in the same building as one of the Adventist surgeons, another independent more experienced breast surgeon 1 block away from the other and several other independent surgeons in between the two locations -- who have been part of the hospital's 'breast care team' before newer surgeons were hired.
Things I recommend that you ask any physician in Central Florida when you make your appointment by telephone:
• Are you employed or owned by Florida Physicians Medical Group or Adventist Health?
• If so, are you willing to refer to specialists outside the FPMG/Adventist network if I were to need one?
• Are residents in training involved in your care and to what extent? (Some people like resident involvement. If you do NOT, state that up front. You have a choice.)
• Ask any doctor who gives you a referral if the referral is a physician employed or owned by Adventist Health. If so, ask for one or two options outside the network that they think is one of the best in the Orlando area and then do your own research on all the options you are given so you can decide which one is best for what you need and want.
• If you are referred to a surgeon, ask what specialties they have. (General surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and others can do many types of surgeries and procedures, but some have specialties like breast surgery, laparoscopic gallbladder removal, (orthopedists may specialize in hand & wrist, knee replacement, etc.). While any surgeon may be able to do all those, make sure you have one of the best for that procedure and for you.) Some will have one or two things they specialize in. Just because someone CAN do the surgery or whatever procedure you need, the ability to do it does not mean that is the BEST surgeon or specialist for you.
Be your own advocate. If you are afraid to speak up, take someone with you who will! By being aware, asking questions, doing your homework (or having someone do it for you), you will have made a more informed choice -- whether you end up with the Adventist or the independent physician.
NOTE: This includes most of the Adventist employed/owned physicians, but they are continually adding more. There may also be others directly employed by Adventist Health which are harder to track because they are under corporate names. There are also numerous mid-level professionals -- physicians' assistants, nurse practitioners, etc. that I did not list because they work under the primary practice or physician. All radiologists with privileges at Florida Hospital, no matter where their practice location, are employed or owned by Adventist Health/FPMG.
This list is not intended to dissuade you from seeing these physicians. It is simply to make you aware that they are part of the system's network so that you can ask questions and make informed choices.
